Women systemic lupus
The disease occurs nine times more often in women than in men, especially in women in child-bearing years ages 15 to 35, and is also more common in those of non-European descent.
It also is known that some women with systemic lupus can experience worsening of their symptoms prior to their menstrual periods.
Estrogen has been implicated in making the condition worse, and this problem is currently being studied.
Both men and women need to have their blood pressure and cholesterol checked on a regular basis.
Today people with lupus are leading healthier lives and living longer than at any time in history.
It is not known why, but lupus occurs more often in certain ethnic groups.
