The first signs of menopause
Menopause occurs when menstruation ceases for a period of one year; the ten to fifteen years prior to menopause are called perimenopause. The first signs of menopause begin to develop in later thirties or early forties (also called perimenopausal age). Low estrogen levels in middle age send the body through even more visible changes, causing drier skin, new sprouts of hair, even a receding gum line.
Sometimes weight gain is attributed to a slowing metabolism, but some studies have found links between hormonal changes and weight gain. While fatigue can be a sign of many other conditions, in combination with any of the symptoms in this list, it very well may point to menopause. Menopause officially occurs a year after a woman’s last menstrual period.
