Scarlet fever is a bacterial illness caused by the Group A Streptococcus bacteria, which is carried in the nose and mouth. Scarlet fever presents as tonsillitis accompanied by a scarlet rash, called scarlet fever rash. Scarlet fever can be prevented with thorough hand washing and by avoiding people who have the illness. Teach your kids to wash their hands often and don’t share drinking cups and eating utensils with other kids. If your child has scarlet fever, keep them home until she is better to prevent the illness from spreading. Caused by the same bacteria that causes strep throat, the illness is usually transmitted through contact with someone who is already sick. Scarlet fever is a rash that sometimes occurs in people that have strep throat. The rash is most often seen in children 18 and under.
